Cyprus Ports Authority Employees Protest Against Privatization Plan

Around 200 employees of the Cyprus Ports Authority (CPA) staged a two-hour work stoppage on Tuesday to protest against Troika-driven plans to privatise the organisation.

The employees are members of unions Syalk-Poas, Sidykep-Peo, Sidikap-Poas and Deok. Pasidy and Sek members are not taking part in the strike.

Trade unionist Glafcos Constantinou said the work stoppage will affect the operations of the ports. He did not elaborate.

“We are protesting against failure by the state to engage in a dialogue with the unions before going ahead with the privatisation of semi-government organisations,” Constantinou said.

“We are asking for a dialogue to put our views forward on ways to find the €1.4 billion needed, or at least the sum that corresponds to the CPA, to avoid privatisations,” he added.
